সদাপ্রভুর ভয় জ্ঞানের আরম্ভ; অজ্ঞানেরা প্রজ্ঞা ও উপদেশ তুচ্ছ করে।

প্রভুকে মান্য করা এবং শ্রদ্ধা করাই হল মানুষের সর্বপ্রথম কর্তব্য। এটা তাদের প্রকৃত জ্ঞান অর্জন করতে সাহায্য করে। কিন্তু শয়তান বোকারা অনুশাসন এবং যথার্থ জ্ঞানকে ঘৃণা করে।

কারণ তদ্দ্বারা তুমি আয়ুর দীর্ঘতা, জীবনের বৎসর-বাহুল্য, এবং শান্তি প্রাপ্ত হইবে।

আমার কথাগুলি তোমাকে দীর্ঘ এবং সমৃদ্ধিপূর্ণ জীবন প্রদান করবে।

for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.

For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

দয়া ও সত্য তোমাকে ত্যাগ না করুক; তুমি তদুভয় তোমার কণ্ঠদেশে বাঁধিয়া রাখ, তোমার হৃদয়-ফলকে লিখিয়া রাখ।

ভালোবাসাকে কখনও পরিত্যাগ করো না। সর্বদা সত্‌ এবং বিশ্বস্ত থাকবে। এই জিনিসগুলিকে তোমার নিজের অঙ্গীভূত করে নাও। এইগুলি তোমার কন্ঠে জড়িয়ে রাখো, তোমার হৃদয়ে লিখে রাখো।

Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.

তুমি সমস্ত চিত্তে সদাপ্রভুতে বিশ্বাস কর; তোমার নিজ বিবেচনায় নির্ভর করিও না;

ঈশ্বরকে পরিপূর্ণভাবে বিশ্বাস কর। নিজের জ্ঞানের ওপর নির্ভর কোরো না।

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

তোমার সমস্ত পথে তাঁহাকে স্বীকার কর; তাহাতে তিনি তোমার পথ সকল সরল করিবেন।

তুমি যা কিছু করবে তাতে সর্বদা ঈশ্বরকে এবং তাঁর ইচ্ছাকে স্মরণ করবে। তাহলেই তিনি তোমাকে সাহায্য করবেন।

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

আপনার দৃষ্টিতে জ্ঞানবান হইও না; সদাপ্রভুকে ভয় কর, মন্দ হইতে দূরে যাও।

নিজের বুদ্ধি বিবেচনার ওপর নির্ভর কোরো না। ঈশ্বরকে ভক্তি কর এবং পাপ থেকে দূরে থাকো।

Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

তুমি সদাপ্রভুর সম্মান কর আপনার ধনে, আর তোমার সমস্ত দ্রব্যের অগিমাংশে;

তোমার যথাসর্বস্ব সমর্পণ করে প্রভুকে ধন্য কর। তোমার শস্যের উৎকৃষ্টতম ফসলগুলি প্রভুর সামনে উৎসর্গ কর।

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce;

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase;

ধন্য সেই ব্যক্তি যে প্রজ্ঞা পায়, সেই ব্যক্তি যে বুদ্ধি লাভ করে;

যে ব্যক্তি প্রজ্ঞা লাভ করেছে, সে সুখী হবে। যখন সে বোধশক্তি প্রাপ্ত হবে, তখন সে আশীর্বাদধন্য হবে।

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding,

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

যাহাদের মঙ্গল করা উচিত, তাহাদের মঙ্গল করিতে অস্বীকার করিও না, যখন তাহা করিবার ক্ষমতা তোমার হাতে থাকে।

যখনই সম্ভব হবে, যাদের তোমার সাহায্যের দরকার, তাদের ভালো করো।

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.

জ্ঞানবানেরা সম্মানের অধিকারী হইবে, কিন্তু অবজ্ঞাই হীনবুদ্ধিদের উন্নতি।

জ্ঞানী লোকরা এমন জীবনযাপন করে যা সম্মান আনে। কিন্তু নির্বোধরা এমন জীবনযাপন করে যার পরিণতি লজ্জা।

The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace.

The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.

বৎস, তুমি আপন পিতার আজ্ঞা পালন কর, আপন মাতার ব্যবস্থা ত্যাগ করিও না।

পুত্র আমার, তোমার পিতার আদেশসমূহ শোন। তোমার মাতার শিক্ষাগুলি ভুলো না।

My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.

জ্ঞানবান পুত্র পিতার আনন্দজনক, কিন্তু হীনবুদ্ধি পুত্র মাতার খেদজনক।

এক জন জ্ঞানী পুত্র তার পিতাকে সুখী করে। কিন্তু এক জন নির্বোধ পুত্র তার মাকে খুবই দুঃখী করে।

A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

যে শিথিল হস্তে কর্ম্ম করে, সে দরিদ্র হয়; কিন্তু পরিশ্রমীদের হস্ত ধনবান করে।

এক জন অলস ব্যক্তি দরিদ্র হবে। কিন্তু এক জন পরিশ্রমী মানুষ ধনী হবে।

A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

যে দ্বেষ ঢাকিয়া রাখে, তাহার ওষ্ঠাধর মিথ্যাবাদী; আর যে পরীবাদ রটায়, সে হীনবুদ্ধি।

যে ব্যক্তি তার ঘৃণা লুকিয়ে রাখে সে হয়ত একজন মিথ্যেবাদী। কিন্তু যারা মিথ্যে অপবাদ রটায় তারা বোকা।

The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool.

সদাপ্রভুর আশীর্ব্বাদই ধনবান করে, এবং তিনি তাহার সহিত মনোদুঃখ দেন না।

প্রভুর আশীর্বাদই তোমাকে ধনবান করবে। তিনি তার সঙ্গে সংকট আনবেন না।

The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

কুকর্ম্ম করা অজ্ঞানের আমোদ, আর প্রজ্ঞা বুদ্ধিমানের আমোদ।

নির্বোধ লোকরা কু-কাজ করতে ভালোবাসে। কিন্তু বিচক্ষণ ব্যক্তি প্রজ্ঞাতেই সন্তুষ্ট থাকেন।

Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.

It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

দুষ্ট যাহা ভয় করে, তাহার প্রতি তাহাই ঘটিবে; কিন্তু ধার্ম্মিকদের বাসনা সফল হইবে।

প্রভুকে সম্মান করলে তুমি দীর্ঘজীবি হবে। কিন্তু পাপীলোকদের আযু হ্রাস পাবে।

অহঙ্কার আসিলে অপমানও আইসে; কিন্তু প্রজ্ঞাই নম্রদিগের সহচারী;

যারা অহঙ্কারী তাদের লজ্জায় ফেলা হবে। কিন্তু বিনয়ীরা জ্ঞান অর্জন করবে।

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

ক্রোধের দিনে ধন উপকার করে না; কিন্তু ধার্ম্মিকতা মৃত্যু হইতে রক্ষা করে।

ঈশ্বর যে দিন লোকদের শাস্তি দেবেন, ধনসম্পদ কোন কাজে লাগবে না। কিন্তু ধার্মিকতা মানুষকে মৃত্যু থেকে রক্ষা করবে।

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

মুখ দ্বারা পাষণ্ড আপন প্রতিবাসীকে নষ্ট করে; কিন্তু জ্ঞান দ্বারা ধার্ম্মিকগণ উদ্ধার পায়।

দুষ্ট ব্যক্তি তার কথার দ্বারা অন্য লোকের ক্ষতি করতে পারে। কিন্তু ভালো লোকরা তাদের জ্ঞান দ্বারা সুরক্ষিত হয়।

With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.

An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

কর্ণেজপ গুপ্ত কথা ব্যক্ত করে; কিন্ত যে আত্মায় বিশ্বস্ত, সে কথা গোপন করে।

যে ব্যক্তি অন্য লোকের গোপন কথা ফাঁস করে দেয় তাকে বিশ্বাস করা যায় না। যে ব্যক্তি গুজব ছড়ায় না তাকে বিশ্বাস করা যায়।

Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered

A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

সুমন্ত্রণার অভাবে প্রজালোক পতিত হয়; কিন্তু মন্ত্রি-বাহুল্যে জয় হয়।

যদি একটি জাতির নেতাদের বিজ্ঞ দিশাজ্ঞানের অভাব থাকে তাহলে সেই জাতির পতন অনিবার্য। কিন্তু অনেক সু-উপদেষ্টারা একটি জাতিকে নিরাপদ রাখতে পারে।

Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

কেহ কেহ বিতরণ করিয়া আরও বৃদ্ধি পায়; কেহ কেহ বা ন্যায্য ব্যয় অস্বীকার করিয়া কেবল অভাবে পড়ে।

যে ব্যক্তি মুক্ত হস্তে দান করে সে আরও বেশী পাবে। যে ব্যক্তি বিতরণ করতে অস্বীকার করে সে অচিরেই গরীব হয়ে যাবে।

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.

There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

দানশীল ব্যক্তি পরিতৃপ্ত হয়, জল-সেচনকারী আপনিও জলে সিক্ত হয়।

যে শাসন ভালবাসে, সে জ্ঞান ভালবাসে; কিন্তু যে অনুযোগ ঘৃণা করে, সে পশুবৎ!

যে ব্যক্তি জ্ঞানলাভ করতে উদগ্রীব, সে তার নিজের সমালোচনা শুনলে ক্রুদ্ধ হবে না। যে ব্যক্তি নিজের ত্রুটি বিচ্যুতি সম্পর্কে অন্যের অনুযোগ শুনতে অপছন্দ করে সে নির্বোধ।

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.

Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

সৎ লোক সদাপ্রভুর নিকটে অনুগ্রহ পাইবে; কিন্তু তিনি কুকল্পনাকারীকে দোষী করিবেন।

প্রভু ধার্মিকদের ওপর সন্তুষ্ট। কিন্তু যারা কু-পরিকল্পনা করে প্রভু তাদের দোষী হিসেবে বিচার করেন।

A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but a man of evil devices he condemns.

A good man obtaineth favour of the Lord: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.

মনুষ্য আপন বিজ্ঞতানুরূপ প্রশংসা পায়; কিন্তু যে কুটিলচিত্ত, সে তুচ্ছীকৃত হয়।

লোকরা জ্ঞানী মানুষের প্রশংসা করে। কিন্তু লোকরা কোনও নির্বোধ ব্যক্তিকে সম্মান করে না।

A man is commended according to his good sense, but one of twisted mind is despised.

A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.

অজ্ঞানের পথ তাহার নিজের দৃষ্টিতে সরল; কিন্তু যে জ্ঞানবান, সে পরামর্শ শুনে।

নির্বোধরা ভাবে তাদের পথই শ্রেষ্ঠ পথ। কিন্তু বিবেচকরা অন্যের পরামর্শ খোলা মনে গ্রহণ করে।

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

সত্যের ওষ্ঠ চিরকাল স্থায়ী; কিন্তু মিথ্যাবাদী জিহ্বা নিমেষমাত্র স্থায়ী।

যে ব্যক্তি মিথ্যা কথা বলে তার বাক্য ক্ষণস্থায়ী। কিন্তু সত্য চিরকালই অমর।

Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

পরিশ্রমীদের হস্ত কর্ত্তৃত্ব পায়; কিন্তু অলস পরাধীন দাস হয়।

কঠোর পরিশ্রমীদের অন্যান্য শ্রমিকদের দায়িত্বে রাখা হবে। কিন্তু যে অলস তাকে চির কাল অন্যের দাসত্ব করে যেতে হবে।

The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor.

The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.

অলীকতায় অর্জ্জিত ধন ক্ষয় পায়; কিন্তু যে ব্যক্তি হস্ত দ্বারা সঞ্চয় করে, সে অধিক পায়।

যারা পয়সার জন্য ঠকায়, তারা শীঘ্রই সব পয়সা হারাবে। কিন্তু পরিশ্রমের বিনিময়ে যারা অর্থ রোজগার করে তাদের অর্থ ক্রমশঃ বৃদ্ধি পায়।

Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

জ্ঞানীদের সহচর হও, জ্ঞানী হইবে; কিন্তু যে হীনবুদ্ধিদের বন্ধু, সে ভগ্ন হইবে।

জ্ঞানীদের সঙ্গে বন্ধুত্ব করো তাহলে তুমিও জ্ঞানী হয়ে উঠবে। কিন্তু যদি তুমি নির্বোধদের সঙ্গে বন্ধুত্ব করো তাহলে সমস্যায় পড়বে।

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

স্ত্রীলোকদের বিজ্ঞতা তাহাদের গৃহ গাঁথে, কিন্তু অজ্ঞানতা স্বহস্তে তাহা ভাঙ্গিয়া ফেলে।

এক জন জ্ঞানী মহিলা তার জ্ঞান দিয়েই নিজের সংসার তৈরী করে। কিন্তু বোকারা সেটা ভেঙ্গে ফেলে।

The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

যে ক্রোধে ধীর, সে বড় বুদ্ধিমান; কিন্তু আশুক্রোধী অজ্ঞানতা তুলিয়া ধরে।

ধৈর্য্যশীল এক জন মানুষ ভীষণ সপ্রতিভ হয়। আর যে সহজে রেগে যায় সে তার মূর্খামির প্রমাণ দেয়।

Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.

He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

যে ব্যক্তি ক্রোধী, সে বিবাদ উত্তেজিত করে; কিন্তু যে ক্রোধে ধীর, সে বিবাদ ক্ষান্ত করে।

রগচটা মানুষ সমস্যা সৃষ্টি করে কিন্তু ধৈর্যশীল মানুষ শান্তি ফিরিয়ে আনে।

A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.

A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

মন্ত্রণার অভাবে সঙ্কল্প সকল ব্যর্থ হয়; কিন্তু মন্ত্রিবাহুল্যে সে সকল সুস্থির হয়।

যদি কেউ পর্যাপ্ত উপদেশ না পায় তাহলে তার পরিকল্পনা খাটে না। কিন্তু কেউ যদি জ্ঞানীদের কথা শুনে চলে তাহলে তার পরিকল্পনা সাফল্য লাভ করবে।

Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.

Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

যে বাক্যে মন দেয়, সে মঙ্গল পায়; এবং যে সদাপ্রভুতে নির্ভর করে, সে ধন্য।

যে ব্যক্তি অপরের কাছ থেকে শিক্ষাগ্রহণ করে সে লাভবান হবে। যে প্রভুর ওপর বিশ্বাস রেখে চলে সে প্রভুর আশীর্বাদ পাবে।

Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.

He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.

কুটিল ব্যক্তি বিবাদ খুলিয়া দেয়, পরীবাদক মিত্রভেদ জন্মায়।

এক জন সমস্যা সৃষ্টিকারী সব সময় সমস্যার সৃষ্টি করবে। সে গুজব ছড়িয়ে ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধুদের মধ্যে অশান্তির কারণ ঘটাবে।

A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.

A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

যে ক্রোধে ধীর, সে বীর হইতেও উত্তম, নিজ আত্মার শাসনকারী নগর-জয়কারী হইতেও শ্রেষ্ঠ।

এক জন বলিষ্ঠ যোদ্ধা হওয়ার থেকে ধৈর্য্যশীল হওয়া ভাল। একটি সম্পূর্ণ শহরের দখল নেওয়ার চেয়ে নিজের রাগের ওপর নিয়ন্ত্রণ পাওয়া শ্রেয়।

Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

যে উপকার পাইয়া অপকার করে, অপকার তাহার বাটী ত্যাগ করিবে না।

তোমার প্রতি কৃত কোন ভালো কাজের জন্য অসৎভাবে তার প্রতিদান দিও না। যদি তুমি এরকম কর তাহলে তুমি সারা জীবন সংকটের মধ্যে থাকবে।

If anyone returns evil for good, evil will not depart from his house.

Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

বন্ধু সর্ব্বসময়ে প্রেম করে, ভ্রাতা দুর্দ্দশার জন্য জন্মে।

এক জন বন্ধু সব সময় ভালোবাসবে। এক জন সত্যিকারের ভাই সর্বদা তোমাকে সমর্থন করবে এমকি তোমার বিপদের সময়েও।

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

সানন্দ হৃদয় স্বাস্থ্যজনক; কিন্তু ভগ্ন আত্মা অস্থি শুষ্ক করে।

আনন্দ হল একটি ভালো ওষুধের মত। কিন্তু দুঃখ হল অসুস্থতার মত।

A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

হীনবুদ্ধি বিবেচনায় প্রীত হয় না, কেবল নিজ মনেরই কথা প্রকাশে প্রীত হয়।

এক জন নির্বোধ অন্যদের কাছ থেকে কিছু শিখতে চায় না। সে শুধু নিজের মনের কথাই প্রকাশ করতে সচেষ্ট থাকে।

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.

A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.

যে ব্যক্তি আপন কার্য্যে অলস, সে বিনাশকের সহোদর।

কুকর্মে যে লিপ্ত থাকে তার সঙ্গে বিনাশকারীর কোন পার্থক্য নেই।

Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.

সদাপ্রভুর নাম দৃঢ় দুর্গ; ধার্ম্মিক তাহারই মধ্যে পলাইয়া রক্ষা পায়।

প্রভুর নাম হল একটি শক্তিশালী মিনারের মত। ভালো লোকরা প্রভুর কাছে আশ্রয়ের জন্য ছুটে যেতে পারে।

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

শুনিবার পূর্ব্বে যে উত্তর করে,তাহা তাহার পক্ষে অজ্ঞানতা ও অপমান।

অন্যদের কথা শেষ করতে দেওয়ার পর তুমি উত্তর দিতে শুরু করবে। যদি তুমি এরকম কর তাহলে তুমি অপ্রস্তুত হবে না অথবা তোমাকে বোকার মত দেখতে লাগবে না।

If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

মরণ ও জীবন জিহ্বার অধীন; যাহারা তাহা ভালবাসে, তাহারা তাহার ফল ভোগ করিবে।

জিহ্বা এমন কথা বলতে পারে যা জীবন অথবা মৃত্যু আনে। যারা কথা বলতে ভালোবাসে তাদের কথার দরুন যা পরিনাম হতে পারে সে সম্বন্ধে তাদের অবশ্যই প্রস্তুত থাকতে হবে।

ধন দ্বারা অনেক বন্ধু লাভ হয়; কিন্তু দরিদ্র আপন বন্ধু হইতে পৃথক্ হয়।

ধনী ব্যক্তির ধন-সম্পদই অসংখ্য বন্ধু জোগাড় করে দেয় কিন্তু দরিদ্রকে সবাই ছেড়ে চলে যায়।

Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend.

Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

যে দরিদ্রকে কৃপা করে, সে সদাপ্রভুকে ঋণ দেয়; তিনি তাহার সেই উপকারের পরিশোধ করিবেন।

দরিদ্রকে টাকা দেওয়া মানে তা প্রভুকে ঋণ দেওয়া। তোমার এই দয়ালু মনের জন্য প্রভু তোমাকে তা ফিরিযে দেবেন।

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

মানুষের মনে অনেক সঙ্কল্প হয়, কিন্ত সদাপ্রভুরই মন্ত্রণা স্থির থাকিবে।

মানুষ অসংখ্য পরিকল্পনা করে কিন্তু একমাত্র প্রভুর পরিকল্পনাই বাস্তবায়িত হয়।

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.

যে পিতার প্রতি উপদ্রব করে ও মাতাকে  তাড়াইয়া দেয়, সে লজ্জাকর ও অপমানজনক পুত্র।

যে ব্যক্তি তার পিতার পকেট থেকে চুরি করে এবং তার মাকে বাড়ী থেকে তাড়িয়ে দেয়, সে এক জন জঘন্য কুলাঙ্গার।

He who does violence to his father and chases away his mother is a son who brings shame and reproach.

He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

হে বৎস, শাসন মানিতে নিবৃত্ত হইলে তুমি জ্ঞানের কথা হইতে ভ্রান্ত হইবে।

যদি তুমি নির্দেশ মেনে চলা বন্ধ করো তাহলে তুমি তোমার বোকামিগুলো চালিয়ে যাবে। চির দিন ভুলগুলো করে যাবে।

Cease to hear instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

নিদ্রাকে ভালবাসিও না, পাছে দীনতা ঘটে; তুমি চক্ষু মেল, খাদ্যে তৃপ্ত হইবে।

তুমি যদি ঘুমোনোর পিছনে সময় ব্যয় কর তাহলে তুমি দারিদ্রে কষ্ট পাবে। কিন্তু যদি তুমি তোমার সময় কঠোর পরিশ্রমে ব্যয় কর তাহলে তোমার খাদ্যের অভাব হবে না।

Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.

যে আপন পিতাকে কিম্বা মাতাকে শাপ দেয়, ঘোর অন্ধকারে তাহার প্রদীপ নিভিয়া যাইবে।

যে নিজের পিতামাতার বিরুদ্ধে কথা বলে সে হল সেই ধরণের আলো যা শীঘ্রই অন্ধকারে পরিণত হবে।

If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness.

যে অধিকার প্রথমে ত্বরায় পাওয়া যায়, তাহার শেষ ফল আশীর্ব্বাদযুক্ত হইবে না।

সহজে অর্জিত ধন অবশেষে তার মূল্য হারাবে।

An inheritance gained hastily in the beginning will not be blessed in the end.

তুমি বলিও না, অপকারের প্রতিফল দিব; সদাপ্রভুর অপেক্ষা কর, তিনি তোমাকে রক্ষা করিবেন।

কেউ যদি তোমার বিরুদ্ধে কিছু করে থাকে তাহলে তুমি তাকে শাস্তি দিতে যেও না। বরং ধৈর্য্য ধরো প্রভু শেষে তোমাকেই জয়ী করবেন।

Do not say, "I will repay evil"; wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

পরিশ্রমীর চিন্তা হইতে কেবল ধনলাভ হয়, কিন্তু যে কেহ হঠকারী, তাহার কেবল অভাব ঘটে।

বুদ্ধিপূর্ণ পরিকল্পনা লাভের দিকে নিয়ে যেতে পারে। কিন্তু তুমি যদি সতর্ক না হও এবং কাজের ক্ষেত্রে তাড়াহুড়ো করো তাহলে তুমি গরীব হয়ে যাবে।

The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.

The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.

যুদ্ধের দিনের জন্য অশ্ব সুসজ্জিত হয়; কিন্তু বিজয় সদাপ্রভু হইতে হয়।

মানুষ যতই যুদ্ধ জয়ের প্রস্তুতি নিক প্রভু না চাইলে কিছুতেই তারা যুদ্ধে জয়লাভ করতে পারবে না।

The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord.

নম্রতার ও সদাপ্রভুর ভয়ের পুরস্কার, ধন, সম্মান ও জীবন।

বিনয়ী হও এবং প্রভুকে সম্মান জানাও। তাহলেই তুমি ধন-সম্পদ, সম্মান এবং জীবন লাভ করবে।

The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.

By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.

বালককে তাহার গন্তব্য পথানুরূপ শিক্ষা দেও; সে প্রাচীন হইলেও তাহা ছাড়িবে না।

শৈশব কাল থেকে একটি শিশুকে ঠিক পথে বাঁচতে শেখাও। শিশুটি তার বৃদ্ধ বয়স পর্যন্ত ঠিক পথে বাঁচা অব্যাহত রাখবে।

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

বৎস, তুমি শুন, জ্ঞানবান হও, তোমার হৃদয় সৎপথে চালাও।

তোমার জন্মদাতা পিতার কথা শুন, তোমার মাতা বৃদ্ধা হইলে তাঁহাকে তুচ্ছ করিও না।

পিতা যা বলে তা শুনে চলো। পিতা ছাড়া তোমার জন্ম হতো না। এবং মাকে সম্মান জানাও। এমনকি সে বৃদ্ধা হলেও তাকে সম্মান জানাবে।

Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

সত্য ক্রয় কর, বিক্রয় করিও না; প্রজ্ঞা, শাসন ও সুবিবেচনা [ক্রয় কর]।

সত্য, জ্ঞান, শিক্ষা এবং বোধ খুব মূল্যবান। এগুলিকে তোমার কেনা উচিত্‌, বিক্রি করা নয়।

Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

ধার্ম্মিকের পিতা মহা-উল্লাসিত হন, জ্ঞানবানের জন্মদাতা তাহাতে আনন্দ করেন।

সজ্জন ব্যক্তির পিতা অত্যন্ত সুখী হয়। যদি কারো শিশুপুত্র জ্ঞানী হয় তাহলে সেই শিশু আনন্দ বয়ে আনে।

The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.

তোমার পিতামাতা আহ্লাদিত হউন, তোমার জননী উল্লাসিত হউন।

সুতরাং তোমার পিতামাতাকে সুখী হতে দাও। তোমার মা, যিনি তোমাকে জন্ম দিয়েছেন তাঁকে আনন্দ করতে দাও।

যে আপন আত্মা দমন না করে, সে এমন নগরের তুল্য, যাহা ভাঙ্গিয়া গিয়াছে, যাহার প্রাচীর নাই।

যে মানুষ নিজেকে সামলাতে পারে না সে হল সেই শহরের মতো যার প্রাচীর ভেঙে গেছে।

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

কব্জাতে যেমন কবাট ঘুরে, তেমনি অলস আপন খট্টায় ঘুরে।

এক জন অলস ব্যক্তি হল দরজার মতো। দরজা যেমন ঠিক কব্জার সাথে ঘুরে যায়, যে অলস সেও ঠিক তেমনি ভাবে বিছানায় পাশ ফিরে যায়। সে আর অন্য কোথাও যায় না।

As a door turns on its hinges, so does a sluggard on his bed.

As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

যে খাত খোদে, সে তাহার মধ্য পতিত হইবে; যে প্রস্তর গড়াইয়া দেয়, তাহারই উপরে তাহা ফিরিয়া আসিবে।

যে মানুষ অন্য মানুষকে ফাঁদে ফেলতে চায় সে নিজেই নিজের ফাঁদে পড়ে। যে ব্যক্তি অন্য লোকের ওপর পাথর গড়িযে ফেলতে চায় সে নিজেই সেই পাথরের তলায় পিষে যায়।

Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling.

কল্যের বিষয়ে গর্ব্বকথা কহিও না; কেননা এক দিন কি উপস্থিত হইবে, তাহা তুমি জান না।

তোমার ভবিষ্যৎ সম্পর্কে মিথ্যে অহঙ্কার করো না। কারণ কাল কি হবে তা তোমার অজানা।

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

অপরে তোমার প্রশংসা করুক, তোমার নিজ মুখ না করুক; অন্য লোকে করুক, তোমার নিজ ওষ্ঠ না করুক।

কখনও নিজের প্রশংসা নিজে করো না, অন্যকে তা করতে দাও।

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.

ক্রোধ নিষ্ঠুর ও কোপ বন্যাবৎ, কিন্তু অন্তর্জ্বালার কাছে কে দাঁড়াইতে পারে?

ক্রোধ নিষ্ঠুর ও নীচ এবং ধ্বংসের কারণ। কিন্তু ঈর্ষা এর থেকেও খারাপ।

Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?

Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

বরং প্রকাশ্য অনুযোগ ভাল, তবু গুপ্ত প্রেম ভাল নয়।

গুপ্ত প্রেম অপেক্ষা খোলাখুলি সমালোচনা ভাল।

Better is open rebuke than hidden love.

Open rebuke is better than secret love.

যে সিদ্ধভাবে চলে, সে রক্ষা পাইবে; কিন্তু যে বক্রগামী দুই পথে চলে, সে একটায় পতিত হইবে।

যদি এক জন মানুষ সঠিক পথে থাকে তবে সে নিরাপদে থাকবে। কিন্তু যে মন্দ হবে সে তার ক্ষমতা হারাবে।

Whoever walks in integrity will be delivered, but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall.

Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.

হীনবুদ্ধি আপনার সমস্ত ক্রোধ প্রকাশ করে, কিন্তু জ্ঞানী তাহা সম্বরণ করিয়া প্রশমিত করে।

এক জন বোকা লোক সহজেই রেগে যায় কিন্তু জ্ঞানী মানুষ ধৈর্য্য ধরে নিজেকে সামলে রাখে।

A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.

A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

মনুষ্যের অহংকার তাহাকে নীচে নামাইবে, কিন্তু নম্রচিত্ত ব্যক্তি সম্মান পাইবে।

যদি এক জন ব্যক্তি নিজেকে অন্যদের তুলনায় অনেক ভালো মনে করে তাহলে সে নিজের পতনের কারণ হয়। কিন্তু যদি কোন ব্যক্তি বিনয়ী হয় তাহলে লোকে তাকে শ্রদ্ধা করে।

One's pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.

A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

লোক-ভয় ফাঁদজনক; কিন্তু যে সদাপ্রভুতে বিশ্বাস করে, সে উচ্চে স্থাপিত হইবে।

ভয় হল ফাঁদের মতো। কিন্তু যদি তুমি প্রভুর ওপর বিশ্বাস রাখো তাহলে তুমি নিরাপদে থাকবে।

The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.

The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

যে চক্ষু আপন পিতাকে পরিহাস করে, নিজ মাতার আজ্ঞা মানিতে অবহেলা করে, উপত্যকার কাকেরা তাহা তুলিয়া লইবে, ঈগল পক্ষীর শাবকগণ তাহা খাইয়া ফেলিবে।

যে ব্যক্তি তার পিতাকে বিদ্রূপ করে বা তার মাকে মান্য করতে চায় না সে শাস্তি পাবে। তার চোখগুলি যেগুলি ভৎসনাপূর্ণ দৃষ্টিতে তার অভিভাবকদের দিকে দেখেছে সেগুলো উপড়ে নেওয়া হবে এবং শকুন ও দাঁড় কাকদের খাওয়ানো হবে।

The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.

The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

লাবন্য মিথ্যা, সৌন্দর্য্য অসার, কিন্তু যে স্ত্রী সদাপ্রভুকে ভয় করেন, তিনিই প্রশংসনীয়।

রূপলাবণ্য তোমাকে লোকদের সামনে ঠকাতে পারে। কিন্তু যে স্ত্রীলোক প্রভুকে শ্রদ্ধা করে তাকে অবশ্যই প্রশংসা করা উচিত।

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
